How to visit a church for the first time (without the awkward part)

The whole morning, start to finish, so the only surprise is how normal it feels.

Visiting a church you’ve never been to ranks somewhere near a new dentist on most people’s list. You don’t know where to park, you don’t know when to stand, and you’re fairly sure someone is going to make you introduce yourself. Here’s the whole morning in order so none of that lands on you.

Before you leave the house

Wear what you’d wear to a friend’s backyard. Bring coffee if you want; there’s more inside. If you have kids, put shoes on them in the driveway and consider your preparation complete.

The parking lot

Guest spots are painted green near the main doors — about twenty steps from your car to the lobby. If the front lot looks full, the overflow behind the building empties faster after the 9:00 service than you’d expect.

We won’t ask you to stand up, raise a hand, or fill out a card. If you’d rather talk to nobody, that is a completely acceptable Sunday.

Kids check-in

Check-in opens twenty minutes before each service. You’ll get a tag, your child gets a matching one, and no one else can collect them. Tell the volunteer about allergies and they’ll write it on the roster in front of you.

In the room

Four songs, a two-minute welcome, and a message that stays in one Bible passage for about thirty-five minutes. Words are on the screens. Sitting during the music is fine. So is stepping out.

Afterward

People linger. If you want to meet someone, the welcome desk is the shortest path — ask for whoever is standing behind it and they’ll walk you to a pastor. If you want to leave, walk out the doors you came in. We’ll be glad you came either way.

The two-sentence version

Come at 8:50, park in the green spots, sit wherever you like, leave when you like. That’s it.
